A lengthy, convoluted battle over writer John Steinbeck’s estate may have finally come to an end.
Last week, an appeals court agreed that his daughter-in-law Gail Steinbeck inappropriately thwarted his stepdaughter Waverly Scott Kaffaga’s plans to license some of his work, according to the Associated Press.
A lower court’s $5 million verdict against Gail Steinbeck still stands, but Kaffaga’s request for $8 million in punitive damages was denied.
In his ruling, Judge Richard Tallman wrote: “This has to end. We cannot say it any clearer.”
Gail Steinbeck’s lawyer said Wednesday that they were “assessing our options moving forward” — which, while not promising any such ending, does temper his client’s previous statements about fighting until her last breath.
