Need a silver lining — no matter how small — during the coronavirus outbreak?

George R.R. Martin is dutifully observing social distancing recommendations and spending that time working hard on The Winds of Winter.

“Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day,” he posted on his website.

“Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms … but maybe not as grim as they may become here.”

The Winds of Winter is the (extremely) long-awaited sixth novel in his Song of Ice and Fire series, upon which the smash hit TV series Game of Thrones was based.

Martin acknowledged in the post that his age and physical condition — two causes for concern among fans, for years — make him especially vulnerable to the novel coronavirus and assured them that he’s taking proper measures to stay safe.
