Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel Dune is no stranger to screen adaptations.

But its latest appearance in a director’s hands could be the one that breaks the streak of lackluster — or negative — reception.

Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve persuaded executives to let him split the work into two pieces, the first of which is (currently) expected in theaters on December 18.

Vanity Fair has an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at this movie version of Dune, starring (among others) Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and Jason Momoa.

Head to the magazine’s website for on-set images and interviews with the cast and crew.
