Tana French, the bestselling author of the Dublin Murder Squad series and The Witch Elm, has a sneak peek into her next book for readers.

The Searcher is a standalone novel that comes out October 6.

As she told Entertainment Weekly, it’s her take on a Western novel and “isn't as depressing as the last one.”

It follows Cal, a retired Chicago police officer and recent divorcé, who decides to settle in a rural Irish village.

Of course, since he’s a character in a novel, he can’t simply retire in peace — a child’s disappearance pulls him back into the darker side of the world.

Check out The Searcher's cover and more about French’s process of writing the book in EW.
