Two complementary stories on reading trends crossed our newswire this week.

On one hand, as we happily shared with a member of our book club, our rising anxiety has made it difficult for bookworms to indulge in their favorite activity.

Vox turned to a neuroscientist to break down the cognitive processes causing this reaction, so even if you can’t cure it, you at least understand why it’s happening.

And on the other hand, many folks are doubling their reading time — or at least claiming to have.

The Guardian shared a new survey of a thousand United Kingdom residents who explained that they’re plowing through crime novels and thrillers at a shocking pace, in hopes of comforting themselves.
