Illinois has its first ever honorary poet laureate: the late John Prine.

The singer died April 7 of complications from COVID-19.

His widow, Fiona Whelan Prine, said she knew her late husband would have been proud to receive the honor from his home state, in a statement.

“John had great respect for writers of all kinds. He regarded poets as being among those whose work carried weight, relevance and elevated craft,” she also said, according to Rolling Stone.
