With a massive storm and subsequent power outage hitting Iowa yesterday, we found ourselves resorting to some older-fashioned cooking methods.
(Thank goodness for grills and mild post-storm temperatures!)
Perhaps a wise long-range plan for us would be to bid on a collection of antiquarian cookbooks set to hit the auction block next week, though.
British TV host Ruth Watson will sell her collection through Bonhams on August 19.
Some of the gems: a 1677 cookbook with at least fifty recipes for a specific type of mead; an 1830 cookbook that exhorts US chefs to use their homeland’s ingredients and cooking methods, versus the “English, French and Italian methods of rendering things indigestible”; and an eighteenth-century book including recipes for roasted badger and a viper soup.
