The sheer number of books being published each day may lift readers’ spirits, but it can feel discouraging to the authors trying to stand out.

Penny Sansevieri has a statistic that she hopes will cheer them up: the vast majority (she says at least 90 percent) aren’t marketed at all.

That means authors who do work to promote their books are actually off to a running start.
