Amazon has announced a small change to its Audible program in response to recent pressure from authors and writing organizations.

The Digital Reader shares an email from Audible to authors in which the company says it will pay a royalty on audiobooks that are returned more than seven days after purchase, effective January 1.

Authors have recently expressed concern that allowing — and encouraging — listeners to exchange audiobooks they’ve purchased using Audible credits just means that authors of the subsequent books earn no money on the “sale.”

Nate Hoffelder notes that the email doesn’t address the other complaints being raised about Audible policies and practices, in particular the way in which sales are reported to authors.

The full text of Audible’s email is on The Digital Reader.
