What a year for debut novelists!

Gabriel Bump has received the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence for his first book, Everywhere You Don’t Belong, reports the Associated Press.

The award, which honors outstanding African American fiction writers, brings with it $15,000.

Everywhere You Don’t Belong is a coming-of-age story set in Chicago’s South Side during the 1990s.

It follows in the footsteps of one of its author’s favorite writers: Bryan Washington previously received the award for Memorial (itself a debut novel).
