A rejected cover for the fifth installment of the Tintin comic book series has sold at auction for a near-record amount, according to the Guardian.
Hergé, who wrote and illustrated the long-running series, was told that his design for Le Lotus Bleu would be too expensive to reproduce.
So he revised his work but gave the original piece to the son of his editor.
Last week, that son’s children put Le Lotus Bleu up for auction and received €2.6 million ($3.2 million).
That sum matched a 2014 sale of Superman’s debut but came up short of the 2018 sale of the original Tintin ink flyleaf drawings (€2.65 million, or $3.22 million).
Also in the news: the son of one Captain America co-creator says he is “appalled and mortified” to see imagery from the comics on US Capitol rioters’ clothing.
Neal Kirby told CNN that Captain America is the antithesis of Donald Trump, in whose support the demonstrators stormed the Capitol on January 6.
