February 18 is no slouch in the literary history department.

Author Toni Morrison, who won a Nobel Prize, a Pulitzer Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, was born on this day in 1931.

Those who have loved her work and those ready to give it a try can both check out the New York Times’s Essential Toni Morrison, since it opens with a paean to her work and concludes with specific recommendations for which novel to check out depending on your literary needs.

Going further back in time, we also have the anniversary of the US publication of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Mark Twain’s 1885 novel went on to become a frequent inclusion in high school curricula, but as is often the case with classics, that wasn't a given when it first came out.

Bookmarks has gathered up contemporary reviews of Huck Finn for your Monday morning quarterbacking pleasure.
