The more we listen to audiobooks, the more we appreciate the talented narrators who perform them.

And the more we hear from those narrators about their actual labor, the more we remain in awe of their hard work and skill.

Slate’s podcast Working recently interviewed Abby Craden, an award-winning narrator who has done almost four hundred books (including one by Fussy author Vicki Lewis Thompson) in a variety of genres.

There’s a partial transcript on Slate that includes Craden’s explanation of how she decides how to alter her voice for varying characters and some of the challenges she faces during projects.

You can also listen to the entire show on Slate.
