The author of the Captain Underpants children’s series has apologized for the “harmful racial stereotypes and passively racist imagery” in a 2010 spinoff book.
Scholastic has also withdrawn the publication of The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, a children’s graphic novel written as if characters from Captain Underpants were the authors.
The New York Times reports that Scholastic issued an apology last week and that author Dav Pilkey promised, in a letter posted online, that he would donate his advance and proceeds from the book to charitable organizations.
Pilkey also spoke with Billy Kim, a Korean-American father of two who began a Change.org petition seeking an apology from Scholastic over the racism in the book.
In The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, the title characters are cavemen who travel through time and meet Master Wong, who teaches them kung fu.
