The life of a celebrity, at some point, becomes far more eventful – and strange — than the life of the average person.

But in the case of singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, the drama began far earlier, with a grave childhood illness and a public battle with her small-town pastor taking place long before her Grammy wins.

She tells of these events and more in her just-released memoir, Broken Horses, from which you can read an excerpt in the New York Times.
