Author Angie Thomas takes a pragmatic — yet positive — view about the impact of her writing, in a recent interview with the Guardian.
Of course she expects her most recent YA novel, Concrete Rose, to be the target of a ban.
After all, it contains scenes of violence, references to drugs, and teenage pregnancy — and it’s also a prequel to her bestselling (and frequently challenged) debut, The Hate U Give.
No matter the adult reaction to it, though, Thomas sees the book as an important message to anyone who can identify with its main character, Maverick (the father from The Hate U Give).
