Writer’s Digest has been sharing some of the big-picture mistakes that authors often make (so not grammar, though failing to revise was certainly among earlier entries).

The latest installment in the series may resonate with some of the perfectionists out there: the mistake of revising too much while you’re still writing.

Writer’s Digest editor Moriah Richard gives the example of going through the entire work-in-progress to change a minor character’s age by a few years to illustrate the kinds of revisions that are best left until the end.

That is, if you realize that there’s a major plot issue (as she did), you should definitely resolve it — but smaller issues can wait until the draft is completed.

Richard shares advice on how to keep your urge to revise under control in the post as well.
