Authors have said there’s no secret formula to how much research you need to work into your fiction, when you’re writing about a time, place, or field that you don’t inhabit.

Jake Wolff, an assistant professor of English and novelist, isn’t here to give you a magic number, either.

He does, however, have a process for checking the balance between fact recitation and fiction writing in your novel that he’d like to share.
