Just as understanding what motivates you can positively influence your own behavior, so too can understanding a character’s motivations benefit your writing.
Dave Chesson says that complaints about flat characters can often be attributed to insufficient (or missing) motivation.
He further explains that motivation isn’t the same as a goal — which goal(s) a character sets will be determined by what motivates him or her.
