Donald Maass has long heard the exhortation to write “authentic” characters (and you surely have too).

It wasn’t until recently, though, that the concept truly clicked in his brain.

Maass uses an anecdote about how the actor Laurence Olivier used a walking stick to put himself into a particular role to illustrate what authenticity means in storytelling (and how it’s not just a synonym for accuracy).

He also offers up practical tips for writing authentic characters in his post on Writer Unboxed.
