Just as it takes time to get to know real-life people, it can take some writing and rewriting to fully understand your characters.

Author and editor Kris Spisak urges you not to worry if your novel’s first draft is populated with general sketches rather than distinct portraits of individuals.

There’s plenty of time in the editing and revising stages to flesh out their personalities and characteristics, she says, and she’s identified three areas of character refinement to focus on in a post for Writer’s Digest.
