About a quarter of American adults haven’t consumed even part of a book — print, digital, or audio — in the past year.

Specifically, 23 percent of respondents — or the same share as in 2014 — told Pew Research Center earlier this year that they hadn’t read a book in whole or in part over the past twelve months.

Unsurprisingly, adults with less education and lower household incomes were more likely to fall into the no-book category.

But perhaps a little more interestingly, Pew found that adults 50 and older were less likely to have started a book, compared with younger Americans.

A full demographic breakdown of reading survey respondents is up on Pew’s website.
