Writing and publishing experts frequently encourage authors not to compare themselves to others (with choosing comp titles for their books being an exception).

Orna Ross and Joanna Penn, of the Alliance of Independent Authors, are still endorsing that approach, while acknowledging it’s a struggle for them sometimes, too.

For these two authors, one effective way to address what they’ve dubbed “comparison-itis" is to focus on their own strengths and skills.

While they specifically mention taking the a particular strengths assessment, there’s plenty in their conversation that doesn’t require purchase.
