October is National Cookbook Month, and in honor of the occasion, we’re sharing two articles that caught our fancy.

One, from the New York Times, takes a look at the evolution of pop-culture cookbooks.

They’ve gone from novelty items — in which recipes are just named after characters on TV shows, for instance — to highly researched (and imaginative) tomes like the upcoming The Star Trek Cookbook.

Too much for you? A more traditional offering might be a cookbook that simply shares an author’s experiences, such as the two from writer and poet Maya Angelou.

Literary Hub explores how for Angelou, food held much more significance than basic nutrition and sustenance, and shares one of her family recipes: Momma’s caramel cake from the book Hallelujah! The Welcome Table: A Lifetime of Memories with Recipes.
