Celebrated and accomplished illustrator Jerry Pinkney has died.

His longtime agent told media, including NPR, that Pinkney suffered and died from a heart attack Wednesday at age eighty-one.

Over nearly six decades, he illustrated more than a hundred books, including The Planet of Junior Brown by Virginia Hamilton and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor.

Pinkney received five Coretta Scott King awards and a Caldecott Medal for his picture book The Lion and The Mouse.
