Editor Jim Dempsey, like many of us, feels compelled at this time of year to think about the future.

(How optimistic or pessimistic we are, of course, varies widely.)

But Dempsey isn’t using the change of the year as reason to reflect on our actual future — rather, it prompted him to write a column on the use of the concept of the future in fiction.

The question of what will happen next — be it a dramatic unknown or something relatively small — drives successful fiction, he argues.

Dempsey’s thoughts on how the future powers fiction, and the responses from his fellow authors, are up at Writer Unboxed.
