You’ve probably heard the seemingly counterintuitive advice to avoid writing realistic dialogue in your novel.

(If not — the rationale is that real-life dialogue is often just not all that interesting.) 

Now, on top of that, C.S. Lakin is here to say that you also should not have your characters say exactly what they mean.

She shares two versions of the same passage, one of which has characters stating their feelings directly and the other in which they dance around those truths, to illustrate how much more powerful the latter is.
