Gallup's end-of-the year survey on American reading habits wasn't exactly rosy.
Americans read an average of 12.6 books during the past year, according to the poll performed from December 1-16.
That's the lowest average total since before 1990 and a continuation of a downward trend since 2016.
Gallup notes that the reason seems to be that Americans who read are consuming fewer books, rather than fewer Americans reading.
Specifically, only 27 percent of Americans said they've read more than ten books in the past year — a drop of eight percentage points since 2016.
While most subgroups of readers reported picking up fewer books, three subgroups that comprise more avid readers — college graduates, women, and older Americans — saw steeper declines.
