A new translation reminds us that "Bambi" is a deep tale

Disney may have made sure that generations recognize Bambi as a coming-of-age story starring a deer.

But a new translation of Felix Salten's novel, The Original Bambi: The Story of a Life in the Forest, reminds us that it certainly didn't begin life as a children's story.

The New York Times reviews Jack Zipes's new version, which comes out February 22, and puts it into historical perspective.

Namely: Felix Salten was born Siegmund Salzmann but changed his name to disguise his Jewish ancestry, and eventually fled Vienna for Switzerland.
