Kristine Kathryn Rusch's first post on exclusivity-based services for indie authors shared the benefits of them, if authors use them strategically.

Emphasis on the last part — because if they're used naively or ill-informedly, they can be career-threatening.

Rusch, as usual, isn't bringing this possibility up as a scare tactic, but as a potent urge to educate yourself.

She shares her own misstep in the realm of exclusivity, as well as a more recent crisis that an established author underwent because of her reliance on an exclusive ecosystem, to illustrate the dangers of not examining these programs critically.

Check out Rusch's business musings post on potential problems with long-term or even permanent exclusivity for what indie authors need to know.
