Authors, like readers, are probably of varying opinions on the value of book-to-screen adaptations.

Author Sarah Perry, whose novel The Essex Serpent has become a series for AppleTV+, falls near the enthusiastic part of the spectrum.

She writes, in the Guardian, that she never even dreamed of having the book be optioned and describes the mostly exciting but also somewhat melancholy experience of watching the adaptation unroll.

(One thing she's unambiguously happy with? The main character casting.)
