Once, long ago, someone at Fussy may have been involved in an argument that was ostensibly about overcooked bacon.

An astute listener, though, pointed out that the conflict wasn't really about the bacon — it was about other ongoing sources of tension and anger, not just one breakfast.

And that layering is what Becca Puglisi is promoting in a post for My Story Doctor.

In her opinion, strong dialogue in a novel requires subtext to underscore the emotions and motivations behind the actual words being uttered, and she has a sample exchange to illustrate her point.
