We've shared many of the benefits of self-publishing on the author newswire (and, yes, some of the challenges of it).

Penny Sansevieri has a pro to add to the list: it gives you far more power if you're working on a series than a publishing company would.

Specifically, you're best served by going indie from the start if you want to be able to offer ebook bundles and rebrand covers, among other abilities.

Sansevieri's guide to why authors should consider self-publishing a series, versus seeking a publishing company, is at her Author Marketing Experts blog.
