When author James Byrne was asked to write a piece on how to pace a thriller novel, he was honored. And then stumped.

He wasn't sure how to define pacing, which makes sense — the only thing he could think of at first was what it isn't, and that's cookie-cutter.

So instead of sharing a formula, Byrne suggests finding a "metronome" that will help you assess whether you're keeping a solid rhythm in your novel.
