Yesterday, we happened to be running an errand in the car when NPR interviewed author Candice Millard about her new book, River of the Gods: Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile.
It was serendipitous timing, as we came back to work to discover Amazon's list of the best books of 2022 so far.
Featured among the top ten: River of the Gods. And it's not hard, after hearing snippets of the NPR interview, to imagine why.
The book is the story of Englishmen Richard Francis Burton and John Hanning Speke, plus Sidi Mubarak Bombay, a man from East Africa who was enslaved for twenty years.
Bombay eventually regained his freedom and found his way to Burton and Speke, who were obsessed with finding the source of the Nile River.
Millard outlines the whole dramatic story of how these three men met and journeyed throughout parts of Africa that white explorers had yet to see in a conversation with Fresh Air's Dave Davies.
