A fascinating character is a benefit to fiction in any genre, for sure.

But author A.G. Riddle thinks that when it comes to science fiction, the central idea or question is the biggest source of power.

For instance, the character in his novel Lost in Time who invented a time machine is probably pretty interesting.

But the use of the time machine — to send criminals back to the era of dinosaurs, versus incarcerating them — and how its inventor will potentially confess to a crime, knowing the consequences, to save an innocent person?

Now that's a page-turner.

Riddle shares three of his methods to generate compelling sci-fi plot ideas in a post for Writer's Digest.
