Founding a (fictional) town? Here are the details you need to have

One of my favorite activities as a child was creating a "town" in the basement, where all of my various toys lived.

So imagine my nostalgic excitement when I encountered a Writer's Digest how-to piece on creating a believable fictional town.

It turns out that my elementary-school-aged self did nail a few necessary elements, but author L.G. Davis fills me (and her fellow writers) in on what else is needed to bring a municipality to life.
