Joanna Penn hosted fellow publishing expert Jane Friedman on her Creative Penn podcast to discuss the year that was and the years that could be.

The conversation isn't exclusively about the Penguin Random House-Simon & Schuster thwarted deal, but what we learned from it serves as a launching point for a number of topics.

Those include the importance of backlist sales, the challenges facing midlist authors, different types of publishing paths for authors, and the value of marketing.

Penn and Friedman also discuss the big trends they expect to see in the coming years, particularly the role of artificial intelligence in writing and recording audiobooks.

You can read a transcript of their conversation or listen to it on The Creative Penn.
