The late writer Fay Weldon was among those storytellers whose actual life could be said to be just as wild as her fiction (if not more so).

Weldon, whose most famous works include The Life and Loves of a She-Devil, Praxis, and (perhaps more infamous than famous) The Bulgari Connection, died Wednesday at age ninety-one.

Her life, like these novels, was characterized by a fierce independence and minimal concern for establishment thinking.

The Guardian has extensive coverage of both, with a first-look obituary, a deeper dive into Weldon's life, and reflections from other authors on her effect on them.
