On a day where I feel like I'm behind, news like this makes me feel a little bit more competent.
A library book that was due back at the predecessor of the St. Helena Public Library in California on February 21, 1927, has finally made its way back.
The Guardian reports that Jim Perry found the book in a box that belonged to his late wife; Perry is "pretty sure" that his wife's grandfather was the original borrower.
If the library were to impose the full value of the fine, that would amount to $1,756.
St. Helena Public Library, however, ended late fees back in 2019.
This book — A History of the United States by Benson Lossing — doesn't even come close to the record of latest returned title, however.
That honor goes to a German history book borrowed in 1667 or 1668 from Sidney Sussex College in Cambridge, England; it was discovered on January 16 1956, at least 287 years overdue.
