The publishing experts we follow have plenty of advice to offer, spanning a variety of topics.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • Being a good literary citizen leads to stronger book launches: Author Julie Liddell Whitehead shares how connections she had made — and nurtured — in her pre-fiction career paid off when she went to promote her short-story collection (Jane Friedman).

  • Play the long game: Kathryn Craft examines what she calls the threads that baste together Fredrik Backman's new novel, My Friends, and make it (again in her words) a story that sticks to the reader's ribs after completion (Writer Unboxed).

  • Use the four levels of conflict to strengthen your story: Angela Ackerman also provides a case study, this time with the movie Die Hard, which skillfully mixes a central conflict with story-level conflict, scene-level conflict, and internal conflict (Writers Helping Writers).

  • Indie publishing news summary: Dan Holloway reports on a new alternative to Substack called Ghost, which disseminates your post to a number of platforms, from social media to WordPress to, yes, email subscribers; he also points to two noteworthy artificial-intelligence articles (Alliance of Independent Authors).
