A GoFundMe campaign to keep a historic copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover in England is off to a smashing start.

As of this writing, £17,243 of the £56,250 goal (that’s $21,919 of the $71,505) has been raised.

The money is needed to match an overseas buyer’s bid to acquire the copy of the novel used in its trial for obscenity.

The UK arts minister has temporarily barred it from leaving the country, with the hope that someone — or a group of people — could raise the money to keep it there.

Among the donors: Penguin Books, the TS Eliot estate, and several individuals; read their reasoning in the Guardian.
