The first three episodes of Apple TV’s Dickinson — the quasi-modern adaptation of poet Emily Dickinson’s life — come out Friday, which means the reviews are coming in.

We’ll present you with two takes on the show, in the interest of being fair and balanced.

The Guardian isn’t much of a fan, giving it two stars out of five. In its opinion, the show is a “half-baked comedy series” with “clunky dialogue.”

If that confirms your suspicions, read no further.

But a reviewer over at The Spool, while acknowledging the show’s many weaknesses, says that if you’re already splurging on Apple TV — or able to binge episodes during the seven-day free trial — the compelling characters make it worth a watch.

Hailee Steinfeld, best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in True Grit as well as appearances in Pitch Perfect 3 and Ender’s Game, among other films, stars as Dickinson.
