Edward Snowden, the former CIA employee who helped reveal the NSA’s surveillance programs, says his memoir is being censored in China.
Snowden took to Twitter to criticize the censorship of Permanent Record and to call for help in ensuring Chinese readers can read the text in its entirety.
According to the Bookseller, topics that appear to have been cut include authoritarianism’s role in inspiring street protests during the Arab Spring, China’s firewall to block certain foreign websites, and a reference to Hong Kong as a “reasonably liberal world city” with “nominal authority.”
Snowden said on Twitter that this violates his publishing agreement; the Bookseller says it has reached out to publisher Macmillan for comment.
