The five category winners for the Costa Book Awards were announced yesterday.
These five books will compete for the overall title, to be revealed January 28:
-
First novel: The Confessions of Frannie Langton, by Sara Collins.
-
Novel: Middle England, by Jonathan Coe.
-
Biography: The Volunteer, by Jack Fairweather.
-
Poetry: Flèche, by Mary Jean Chan.
-
Children's book: Asha & the Spirit Bird, by Jasbinder Bilan.
Each of these titles, deemed among the most outstanding books of the year written by UK- or Ireland-based authors, receives a £5,000 (about $6,560) prize.
Middle England has drawn significant attention, given that Brexit heavily influences its plot; judges called it “the perfect novel for now.”
Last year’s overall winner was the biography The Cut Out Girl, by Bart van Es.
