A new adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan that puts Wendy at the forefront hasn’t exactly overwhelmed film critics.

Wendy, which comes out tomorrow, was directed by Benh Zeitlin, who won acclaim in 2012 with Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Like the book, play, and movies before it, Wendy sends our heroine to an island full of wild, adventurous children — but this version lets her indulge in their freedom.

Critics in the Atlantic and Rolling Stone say that it’s here that the movie stutters to a halt.

See more reviews of the film on Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently has a positive score of just 47 percent.
