Imagine being six years old and making history.
That was reality for Ruby Bridges, who was escorted into a previously all-white New Orleans school by US marshals in 1960.
She has now written a book about her experience for young readers, titled Ruby Bridges: This is Your Time.
Ahead of its Tuesday release, she spoke with NPR’s Scott Simon about the isolation and hatred she faced from some — and the immense kindness from others — as well as the anti-racism journey it set her.
You can listen to their conversation below or read it on NPR’s website.
