The Christmas-themed novels that many readers eagerly turn to this time of year don’t just materialize, of course.

Authors have to start thinking about Santa and snow well before these signs of the season make their real-time appearance. 
That, authors have told the Guardian, has become a bit of a challenge in 2020.

After all, the last thing many of us wanted to think about during summer, which still saw its fair share of COVID-related challenges, was a season that would exacerbate those struggles.

So here’s how some authors psyched themselves up to keep the Christmas-novel tradition alive.
