Walter Tevis might be the most popular author at this moment whom you’ve never heard of.

Our apologies if you were familiar with him long before The Queen’s Gambit became a smash hit show on Netflix.

If you weren’t, though, the New York Times is happy to introduce you to the writer, whose novels The Hustler, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and The Color of Money also made it to the screen.

The Times spoke with Allan Scott, the screenwriter who first optioned The Queen’s Gambit literally decades ago; Tevis’s children; a longtime friend; and more, to help us get acquainted with the late author.
