EDIT: After the publication of this post, it was announced that Jennifer Egan's next novel will be released in 2022 instead.

Back in 2010, both Jennifer Egan and Jonathan Franzen released novels that were critical and popular hits.

A Visit From the Goon Squad (hers) and Freedom (his) vied for the same awards, with the former claiming more recognizable ones … but often with the latter mentioned with as much, if not more, prominence.

So it is with bated breath that Literary Hub editor Emily Temple watches how 2021 plays out as Egan and Franzen both publish novels in October.

Not much has been released about hers, except the title (The Thing That Changes Everything); his, called Crossroads: A Novel: A Key to All Mythologies, Volume 1, has a few more public details, which Lit Hub previously shared.

Temple concedes that conditions aren’t as ripe for a high-profile resumption of this rivalry in 2021, but holds out hope for friction that entertains us rather than endangers us.
